How Much Does a Wedding Cost in 2026?

The average US wedding costs about $34,200 in 2026. Here’s what drives that number, what couples really spend by guest count, and how to set your own figure.

The average couple in the US spent $34,200 on their ceremony and reception in 2026, according to The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study. That figure excludes the engagement ring and honeymoon — and, more importantly, it hides a huge spread. Plenty of lovely weddings cost $12,000. Plenty cost $80,000.

This guide breaks down what actually drives the number, so you can set a figure that fits your guest list, your state and your savings — not someone else’s average.

The three numbers that decide your cost

Almost every wedding budget is driven by three inputs. Get these right and the rest is detail.

  1. Guest count. Catering, bar, rentals, stationery, favors and even venue size all scale with headcount. Roughly half of a typical budget moves with every name on the list.
  2. Location. The same wedding costs about 30% more in New York or Hawaii than the national average, and about 15% less in Mississippi or West Virginia.
  3. Date. Saturdays in May, June, September and October are peak season. Off-season dates (December–March) and Fridays or Sundays often unlock 10–30% venue discounts.

Average wedding cost by guest count

Using a national all-in average of about $285 per guest, here’s what typical weddings cost at different sizes:

GuestsBudget-friendlyTypicalElevated
50 guests$7,500$14,500$22,500
80 guests$12,000$23,000$36,000
120 guests$18,000$34,000$54,000
150 guests$22,500$43,000$67,500
200 guests$30,000$57,000$90,000

Notice how fast the totals move. Cutting 30 guests from a 150-person list saves roughly $8,500 at typical pricing — more than most couples spend on photography.

Where the money goes

On a balanced budget, the venue takes about 30% and catering about 22%. Together they’re over half the total. Photography and flowers take about 8% each; attire and music around 7%. We walk through every category in our wedding budget breakdown.

The most expensive line in most weddings isn’t on any invoice. It’s the guest list.

How much do different wedding styles cost?

The "average wedding" assumes a fairly traditional full-day event. Reality spans much wider:

  • Courthouse + restaurant dinner (10–20 guests): often $2,000–$6,000 all-in. The most underrated wedding there is.
  • Backyard wedding (60–100 guests): $10,000–$25,000 once rentals, restrooms and catering are counted honestly. Read our backyard wedding budget guide before assuming it’s cheap.
  • Traditional venue wedding (100–150 guests): $25,000–$50,000 in most states — this is where the national average lives.
  • Destination wedding: the couple often spends less overall ($10,000–$20,000), but guests absorb travel costs — which is why guest counts stay small.

The hidden costs nobody budgets

These are the lines that blow up budgets, because they rarely appear in early quotes:

  • Service charges and tax on catering — often 20–25% on top of the food price, plus local tax.
  • Tips — budget $1,000–$2,000 on a mid-size wedding across all vendors.
  • Postage — heavy or square invitations can double your stamp budget.
  • Overtime — venues and photographers charge by the hour past the contracted time; one extra hour can cost $500–$1,500.
  • Alterations — often $300–$700 on top of the dress price.
  • Marriage license and officiant fees — small, but they belong in the plan.

Rule of thumb: hold back 5–10% of the total as a buffer. Almost every couple spends it.

How to set your own number

  1. Start with cash, not averages. Add your savings to what you’ll save between now and the wedding, plus any confirmed family contributions. That’s your ceiling.
  2. Hold back 5–10% for service charges, tips and surprises.
  3. Divide by your guest count and compare it to what that per-guest figure buys in our cost per guest calculator.
  4. Adjust guests or expectations until the number and the vision agree.
Do it in two minutes. Our wedding budget calculator splits your number across 14 categories and shows the typical range for each in your state.

What’s not in the average

The $34,200 figure doesn’t include the engagement ring (often $5,000+), the honeymoon, wedding-party gifts, or the rehearsal dinner if the couple pays for it. If those are coming out of the same pot, add them to your plan separately.

Does location really matter that much?

Yes — it’s the second-biggest lever after guest count. A 120-guest wedding that costs $30,000 in Ohio can easily run $38,000–$40,000 in California or New York for the same vendors and quality.
